Come, Follow Me – Doctrine and Covenants (August)

Links for other months: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, September, October, November, December

August, Week 1

Day 1

Primary
1. Today read Doctrine and Covenants 84:1–32.
2. Upon returning home from their missions, a group of elders met with the Prophet Joseph Smith. While praying together, the Prophet received a revelation that offered insights about the “power of godliness” (Doctrine and Covenants 84:20) available to women and men through priesthood ordinances.
3. Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said,

In my travels as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, I meet youth all over the world. Many of them struggle with real concerns: “Will God help me? Will He guide my life? How can I receive the help, direction, and peace I need?” My dear young friends, God will help you, and He stands ready to bless you. As our loving Father, He has given us ordinances that help us feel His power in our lives—the power of godliness. (Neil L. Andersen, “The Power of Godliness through Priesthood Ordinances and Blessings,” For the Strength of Youth, Aug. 2021, 10)

4. Who has access to priesthood power? President Camille N. Johnson, Relief Society General President, taught:

Women, men and children access and draw upon priesthood power, the Savior’s power, to help the people they love (see Dallin H. Oaks, “The Melchizedek Priesthood and the Keys,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2020, 69–72). The blessings of priesthood power available to all Church members who keep their covenants—women, men and children—include:

  • Guidance for their lives.
  • Inspiration to know how to serve family members and others.
  • Strength to endure and overcome challenges.
  • Gifts of the Spirit to magnify their abilities.
  • Revelation to know how to fulfill the work they are ordained, set apart or assigned to do.
  • Help and strength to become more like Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father (General Handbook, 3.5).

The Savior is the source of all these blessings. Guidance, inspiration, gifts of the Spirit and revelation all come through the Holy Ghost, sent by the Father in the name of the Savior. …

In my experience, priesthood power, particularly that with which I have been endowed in the house of the Lord, amplifies the companionship of the Holy Ghost and my understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. (Camille N. Johnson, “President Camille N. Johnson: What Must Women and Men Do to Have Access to Priesthood Power?,” Church News, Oct. 30, 2022, thechurchnews.com)

Day 2

Primary
1. There is a Doctrinal Mastery Scripture in this chapter (Doctrine and Covenants 84:20-22).

20 Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest.

21 And without the ordinances thereof, and the authority of the priesthood, the power of godliness is not manifest unto men in the flesh;

22 For without this no man can see the face of God, even the Father, and live.

2. As members of the Church, we receive immeasurable blessings through priesthood power. Because the priesthood is on earth, God can lead us through living prophets and our local Church leaders. Because priesthood ordinances are available to us as individuals and families, “the power of godliness is manifest” in our lives (D&C 84:20).
3. Mary Ellen Smoot, Relief Society general president, said that one objective of Relief Society sisters is to become full participants in receiving the blessings of the priesthood (see “‘For Such a Time as This,’” Ensign, Nov. 1997, 88). Among these blessings are baptism, the gift of the Holy Ghost, the sacrament, ordinances of the temple, patriarchal blessings, fathers’ blessings, and blessings of healing and comfort. Husbands, fathers, home teachers, ward and branch leaders, and other priesthood holders can provide needed priesthood blessings.

Day 3

Primary
1. Today read Doctrine and Covenants 84:33-44.
2. Study the following statement from President Russell M. Nelson, looking for a blessing Heavenly Father gives to those who make and keep covenants with Him.

Each person who makes covenants in baptismal fonts and in temples—and keeps them—has increased access to the power of Jesus Christ. Please ponder that stunning truth!

The reward for keeping covenants with God is heavenly power—power that strengthens us to withstand our trials, temptations, and heartaches better. This power eases our way. Those who live the higher laws of Jesus Christ have access to His higher power. (Russell M. Nelson, “Overcome the World and Find Rest,” Liahona, Nov. 2022, 96)

3. Listen to the song “I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus.”

Youth

3. In speaking of Heavenly Father’s promise, President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency explained:

I have seen that promise fulfilled in my own life and in the lives of others. A friend of mine served as a mission president. He told me that at the end of every day while he was serving, he could barely make it upstairs to bed at night wondering if he would have the strength to face another day. Then in the morning, he would find his strength and his courage restored. You have seen it in the lives of aged prophets who seemed to be renewed each time they stood to testify of the Lord Jesus Christ and the restored gospel. That is a promise for those who go forward in faith in their priesthood service. (Henry B. Eyring, “Faith and the Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2008, 62)

4. President M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles taught:

As we work to magnify our callings, we should seek the inspiration of the Spirit to solve problems in ways that will best help the people we serve. We have handbooks of instruction, and their guidelines should be followed. But within that framework are substantial opportunities to think, to be creative, and to make use of individual talents. The instruction to magnify our callings is not a command to embellish and complicate them. To innovate does not necessarily mean to expand; very often it means to simplify. (M. Russell Ballard, “O Be Wise,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2006, 19)

5. Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles shared:

To know that we have a Father in Heaven and that Jesus Christ is His Only Begotten Son means we are looking farther down the covenant path than just where we are standing today. It means we appreciate we are heirs to all that the Father has; kingdoms without number are His realm and can be ours. The Savior has promised, “If thou art faithful unto the end thou shalt have a crown of immortality, and eternal life in the mansions which I have prepared in the house of my Father.” (Ronald A. Rasband, “The Divine Destiny of His Daughters” [BYU Women’s Conference, Apr. 30, 2021], broadcasts.ChurchofJesusChrist.org)

Day 4

Primary
1. Today read Doctrine and Covenants 84:49-102.
2. In the fall of 1832, missionaries including Jared Carter and Stephen Burnett began returning to Kirtland, Ohio, from preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. It was a joyful time as the elders brought reports of serving the Lord in the eastern United States. Many would soon accept additional calls to continue serving. In our day, we too can serve the Lord by sharing His gospel.
3. Listen to the song “I Feel My Savior’s Love.”

Youth

3. President Russell M. Nelson taught the following:

Everyone deserves the chance to know about the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Every person deserves to know where they can find the hope and peace that “[pass] all understanding” [Philippians 4:7]. (Russell M. Nelson, “Preaching the Gospel of Peace,” Liahona, May 2022, 7)

4. How important is it to share the gospel of Jesus Christ? President Russell M. Nelson explained:

Brothers and sisters, the gospel of Jesus Christ has never been needed more than it is today. … I love the Lord Jesus Christ and testify that His gospel is the only enduring solution for peace. His gospel is a gospel of peace [Doctrine and Covenants 27:16]. …

All missionaries teach and testify of the Savior. The spiritual darkness in the world makes the light of Jesus Christ needed more than ever. (Russell M. Nelson, “Preaching the Gospel of Peace,” Liahona, May 2022, 6–7)

5. What help does the Savior offer us as we serve Him? President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency said:

I testify that the Lord goes before your face whenever you are on His errand. Sometimes you will be the angel the Lord sends to bear others up. Sometimes you will be the one surrounded by angels who bear you up. But always you will have His Spirit to be in your heart, as you have been promised in every sacrament service. You have only to keep His commandments. (Henry B. Eyring, “Fear Not to Do Good,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2017, 103)

Week 2

Day 1

Primary
1.Today read Doctrine and Covenants 85.
2. Read about one way Joseph Smith described the Spirit’s voice in Doctrine and Covenants 85:6. What does it mean that it speaks in a still, small voice?
3. Listen to the song “I Feel My Savior’s Love.”

Youth
1.Today read Doctrine and Covenants 85.
2. In late November 1832, some of the Saints who had moved to Zion had not consecrated their properties as the Lord had commanded. Because of this, they had not received an inheritance of land according to the laws of the Church. The Prophet Joseph Smith addressed this issue in an inspired letter to William W. Phelps, dated November 27, 1832, a portion of which is recorded in Doctrine and Covenants 85.
3. Notice what the Lord wanted to be included in the “history” described in Doctrine and Covenants 85:1–2. Why do you think He wants His Saints to keep a history? What could you record about your “manner of life, [your] faith, and works” that might be a blessing to you and future generations? How might keeping a personal history help you come unto Christ?
4. The Spirit speaks with a “still small voice.” Ponder the words Joseph Smith used to describe the Spirit in Doctrine and Covenants 85:6. In what sense is the Spirit’s voice “still” and “small”? Consider these additional descriptions given through Joseph Smith: Doctrine and Covenants 6:22–24; 8:2–3; 9:7–9; 11:12–13; 128:1. How does the Spirit speak to you?

Day 2
Primary
1. Today read Doctrine and Covenants 86.
2. In the revelation recorded in Doctrine and Covenants 86, the Savior revealed additional meaning to His original interpretation of the parable of the wheat and tares (Matthew 13:36–43). He taught about His efforts to gather the righteous in preparation for His Second Coming.
3. Why does the Savior gather His people? Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught:

The Lord gathers His people when they accept Him and keep His commandments. …

… The Lord gathers His people to worship, to build up the Church, for a defense, and to receive counsel and instruction. …

The Prophet Joseph Smith declared that in all ages the divine purpose of gathering is to build temples so that the Lord’s children can receive the highest ordinances and thereby gain eternal life. (David A. Bednar, “The Spirit and Purposes of Gathering” [Brigham Young University–Idaho devotional, Oct. 31, 2006], byui.edu)

Youth

2. In the revelation recorded in Doctrine and Covenants 86, the Savior revealed additional meaning to His original interpretation of the parable of the wheat and tares (Matthew 13:36–43). He taught about His efforts to gather the righteous in preparation for His Second Coming.
3. President Russell M. Nelson shared how we can participate with the Lord in gathering Israel today.

The Lord is gathering those who will choose to let God be the most important influence in their lives.

For centuries, prophets have foretold this gathering [see Isaiah 11:11–12; 2 Nephi 21:11–12; Mosiah 15:11], and it is happening right now! As an essential prelude to the Second Coming of the Lord, it is the most important work in the world! …

When we speak of gathering Israel on both sides of the veil, we are referring, of course, to missionary, temple, and family history work. We are also referring to building faith and testimony in the hearts of those with whom we live, work, and serve. Anytime we do anything that helps anyone—on either side of the veil—to make and keep their covenants with God, we are helping to gather Israel. (Russell M. Nelson, “Let God Prevail,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2020, 92–93)

(David A. Bednar, “The Spirit and Purposes of Gathering” [Brigham Young University–Idaho devotional, Oct. 31, 2006], byui.edu)

5. How can I be among the wheat the Savior is gathering? Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught:

The Lord explained that in this final time prior to His return, the “wheat,” whom He describes as “the children of the kingdom” [Matthew 13:38], would grow side by side with the “tares,” or those who do not love God and do not keep His commandments. They would “both grow together” [Matthew 13:30] side by side.

This will be our world until the Savior returns, with much that is good and much that is evil on every side.

You may at times not feel like a strong, mature strand of wheat. Be patient with yourself! The Lord said that the wheat would include tender blades springing up [Doctrine and Covenants 86:4, 6]. We are all His Latter-day Saints, and although not yet all we want to be, we are serious in our desire to be His true disciples. (Neil L. Andersen, “Drawing Closer to the Savior,” Liahona, Nov. 2022, 73)

Day 3
Primary
1. Read Doctrine and Covenants 87.
2. In early 1833, not long after Joseph Smith’s prophecy was given, the disagreements that had made it appear that war could break out soon in America were peacefully resolved. What questions do you think you might have had if you had been familiar with Joseph Smith’s prophecy at the time? Orson Pratt recalled thoughts he had when it became unclear how or when the prophecy would be fulfilled.

I knew the prophecy was true, for the Lord had spoken to me and had given me revelation. I knew also concerning the divinity of this work. Year after year passed away, while every little while some of the acquaintances I had formerly made would say, “Well, what is going to become of that prediction? It’s never going to be fulfilled.” Said I, “Wait, the Lord has his set time.” (Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, 18:224–25)

3. How can I feel peace amid the turmoil of the last days? President Russell M. Nelson taught:

It seems that we are accosted daily by an onslaught of sobering news. You may have had days when you wished you could don your pajamas, curl up in a ball, and ask someone to awaken you when the turmoil is over.

But, my dear brothers and sisters, so many wonderful things are ahead. In coming days, we will see the greatest manifestations of the Savior’s power that the world has ever seen. Between now and the time He returns “with power and great glory” (Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:36), He will bestow countless privileges, blessings, and miracles upon the faithful. (Russell M. Nelson, “Overcome the World and Find Rest,” Liahona, Nov. 2022, 95)

4. How can I stand in holy places? President Russell M. Nelson taught:

Whenever any kind of upheaval occurs in your life, the safest place to be spiritually is living inside your temple covenants!

Please believe me when I say that when your spiritual foundation is built solidly upon Jesus Christ, you have no need to fear. (Russell M. Nelson, “The Temple and Your Spiritual Foundation,” Liahona, Nov. 2021, 96)

Day 4
Primary
1. Let’s learn the 9th Article of Faith!

“We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.”

2. Listen to the 9th Article of Faith song and see if you can memorize it!

Week 3

Day 1

Primary
1. Today read Doctrine and Covenants 88:1-13, 41-50.
2. While in Kirtland, Ohio, Joseph Smith and several high priests prayed to Heavenly Father for a revelation regarding the building of Zion. The revelation taught truths about the power and magnitude of the Light of Jesus Christ.
3. “[The Light of Christ is] divine energy, power, or influence that proceeds from God through Christ and gives life and light to all things. It is the law by which all things are governed in heaven and on earth (D&C 88:6–13). It also helps people understand gospel truths and helps to put them on the gospel path that leads to salvation.” (Guide to the Scriptures, “Light, Light of Christ,” scriptures.ChurchofJesusChrist.org)

4. President Boyd K. Packer (1924–2015) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught:

The more we know about the Light of Christ, the more we will understand about life and the more we will have a deep love for all mankind. We will be better teachers and missionaries and parents, and better men and women and children. We will have deeper regard for our brothers and sisters in the Church and for those who do not believe. …

The Light of Christ is as universal as sunlight itself. Wherever there is human life, there is the Spirit of Christ. Every living soul is possessed of it. …

If we understand the reality of the Light of Christ in everyone we see … and within ourselves, … we will have courage and inspiration beyond that which we have known heretofore. And it must be so! And it will be so! All of this is a dimension of gospel truth that too few understand. (Boyd K. Packer, “The Light of Christ,” Ensign, Apr. 2005, 8, 13–14)
5. What is the difference between the Light of Christ and the gift of the Holy Ghost?

President Boyd K. Packer (1924–2015) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught:

Everyone everywhere already has the Spirit of Christ [or Light of Christ], and while the Spirit of the Holy Ghost can visit anyone, the gift of the Holy Ghost is obtained “by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel” (Articles of Faith 1:3), by submitting to “baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; [and the] laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Articles of Faith 1:4). It is not automatically present like the Spirit of Christ is present. This gift must be conferred by one holding authority (see Articles of Faith 1:5). (Boyd K. Packer, “The Light of Christ,” Ensign, Apr. 2005, 13)

Day 2

Primary
1. Today read Doctrine and Covenants 88:14-44.
2. An important part of God’s plan is for us to become like Him, both spiritually and physically. At birth we receive a physical body. This body will one day die and be resurrected.
3. Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught:

Perhaps as much as praying for mercy, we should pray for time and opportunity to work and strive and overcome. Surely the Lord smiles upon one who desires to come to judgment worthily, who resolutely labors day by day to replace weakness with strength. Real repentance, real change may require repeated attempts, but there is something refining and holy in such striving. Divine forgiveness and healing flow quite naturally to such a soul, for indeed “virtue loveth virtue; light cleaveth unto light; [and] mercy hath compassion on mercy and claimeth her own” (D&C 88:40).

With repentance we can steadily improve in our capacity to live the celestial law, for we recognize that “he who is not able to abide the law of a celestial kingdom cannot abide a celestial glory” (D&C 88:22). (D. Todd Christofferson, “The Divine Gift of Repentance,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2011, 39)

4. How are God’s laws evidence of His love for us? President Russell M. Nelson taught:

Divine laws are God’s gifts to His children. … Let me say it as succinctly as I can: As you abide by God’s laws, you are progressing toward exaltation. …

… God’s greatest blessings are reserved for those who obey His laws, as He explained: “For all who will have a blessing at my hands shall abide the law which was appointed for that blessing” [Doctrine and Covenants 132:5]. God’s laws are motivated entirely by His infinite love for us and His desire for us to become all we can become. …

… Exaltation is not easy. Requirements include a focused and persistent effort to keep God’s laws, rigorously repenting when we don’t. But the reward for doing so is far greater than anything we can imagine, because it brings us joy here and “never-ending happiness” [Mosiah 2:41] hereafter. (Russell M. Nelson, “The Love and Laws of God” [Brigham Young University devotional, Sept. 17, 2019], speeches.byu.edu)

Day 3

Primary
1. Today read Doctrine and Covenants 88:51-95.
2. In Doctrine and Covenants 88, the Savior described His power that governs His creations (see verses 41–45). He taught that when we see the stars and the planets in the heavens, we have “seen God moving in his majesty and power” (Doctrine and Covenants 88:47). Jesus Christ then gave a parable to teach about God’s relationship with His creations. It teaches that God has created many worlds inhabited by His children and that He visits each of them. The Lord commanded His friends to call on Him while He was near them (see verses 51–62).
3. What are some ways we can draw near to Jesus Christ? President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency shared:

I experienced the joy of coming closer to the Savior and of His coming closer to me most often through simple acts of obedience to the commandments. (Henry B. Eyring, “Come unto Me,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2013, 22)

4. Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles declared:

Ask, and you will receive. Knock, and it will be opened unto you [see Doctrine and Covenants 88:63]. Trust the Lord [see Proverbs 3:5].

In our daily life it is our paramount task and blessed opportunity to encounter God.

As we set aside pride and approach His throne with a broken heart and a contrite spirit [see 3 Nephi 9:20; Doctrine and Covenants 20:37], He will draw near to us [see Doctrine and Covenants 88:63].

As we seek to follow Jesus Christ and walk the path of discipleship, line upon line, the day will come that we will experience that unimaginable gift of receiving a fulness of joy. (Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “God among Us,” Liahona, May 2021, 11)

5. Read the following statement from President Russell M. Nelson.

When you reach up for the Lord’s power in your life with the same intensity that a drowning person has when grasping and gasping for air, power from Jesus Christ will be yours. When the Savior knows you truly want to reach up to Him—when He can feel that the greatest desire of your heart is to draw His power into your life—you will be led by the Holy Ghost to know exactly what you should do [Doctrine and Covenants 88:63]. (Russell M. Nelson “Drawing the Power of Jesus Christ into Our Lives,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2017, 42)

Day 4

Primary
1. Today read Doctrine and Covenants 88:76–80, 117–141.
2. There is a Doctrinal Mastery scripture in today’s reading, Doctrine and Covenants 88:118.

And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith.

3. In this portion of Doctrine and Covenants 88, the Lord revealed principles of learning and commanded Joseph Smith and others to organize the School of the Prophets. Those participating in the school were to seek wisdom “out of the best books” and learn together “by study and also by faith.”

Youth
1. Today read Doctrine and Covenants 88:76–80, 117–141.

4. President Russell M. Nelson explained:

The Lord taught us how to increase our faith by seeking “learning, even by study and also by faith” [Doctrine and Covenants 88:118; emphasis added]. We strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ as we strive to keep His commandments and “always remember him” [Moroni 4:3]. Further, our faith increases every time we exercise our faith in Him. That is what learning by faith means.

For example, each time we have the faith to be obedient to God’s laws—even when popular opinions belittle us—or each time we resist entertainment or ideologies that celebrate covenant-breaking, we are exercising our faith, which in turn increases our faith. (Russell M. Nelson, “Embrace the Future with Faith,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2020, 75)

5. Where should I seek “words of wisdom”? President Dallin H. Oaks of the First Presidency cautioned:

We live in a time of greatly expanded and disseminated information. But not all of this information is true. We need to be cautious as we seek truth and choose sources for that search. We should not consider secular prominence or authority as qualified sources of truth. We should be cautious about relying on information or advice offered by entertainment stars, prominent athletes, or anonymous internet sources. Expertise in one field should not be taken as expertise on truth in other subjects. …

When we seek the truth about religion, we should use spiritual methods appropriate for that search: prayer, the witness of the Holy Ghost, and study of the scriptures and the words of modern prophets. (Dallin H. Oaks, “Truth and the Plan,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2018, 25)

6. How can learning by faith bless my life? Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles promised blessings to those who seek to learn by faith:

As we look to the future and anticipate the ever more confused and turbulent world in which we will live, I believe it will be essential for all of us to increase our capacity to seek learning by faith. In our personal lives, in our families, and in the Church, we can and will receive the blessings of spiritual strength, direction, and protection as we seek by faith to obtain and apply spiritual knowledge. (David A. Bednar, “Seek Learning by Faith,” Ensign, Sept. 2007, 61)

Week 4

Day 1

Primary
1. Today read Doctrine and Covenants 89:1-17.
2. As was common in 1833, many members of the Church used tobacco and drank alcohol, tea, and coffee. In answer to Joseph Smith’s prayers about the matter, the Lord mercifully revealed the Word of Wisdom.
3.

Over time, Church leaders have provided additional instruction on those things that are encouraged or forbidden by the Word of Wisdom, and have taught that substances that are destructive, habit-forming or addictive should be avoided.

In recent publications for Church members, Church leaders have clarified that several substances are prohibited by the Word of Wisdom, including vaping or e-cigarettes, green tea, and coffee-based products. They also have cautioned that substances such as marijuana and opioids should be used only for medicinal purposes as prescribed by a competent physician. (“Statement on the Word of Wisdom” [official Church statement, Aug. 15, 2019], newsroom.ChurchofJesusChrist.org)

4. President Boyd K. Packer (1924–2015) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said:

Members write in asking if this thing or that is against the Word of Wisdom. It’s well known that tea, coffee, liquor, and tobacco are against it. It has not been spelled out in more detail. Rather, we teach the principle together with the promised blessings. There are many habit-forming, addictive things that one can drink or chew or inhale or inject which injure both body and spirit which are not mentioned in the revelation.

Everything harmful is not specifically listed; arsenic, for instance—certainly bad, but not habit-forming! He who must be commanded in all things, the Lord said, “is a slothful and not a wise servant” (Doctrine and Covenants 58:26). (Boyd K. Packer, “The Word of Wisdom: The Principle and the Promises,” Ensign, May 1996, 17)

Day 2

Primary
1. Today read Doctrine and Covenants 89:18-21.
2. Most of today’s reading is a Doctrinal Mastery scripture! Doctrine and Covenants 89:18-20.

18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;

19 And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;

20 And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.

3. After revealing the Word of Wisdom to Joseph Smith, Jesus Christ explained some of the blessings He offers those who faithfully keep the principles taught in this revelation. Do you see the Word of Wisdom as a blessing from Heavenly Father or as a restriction in your life? What do you know about the blessings Heavenly Father offers to those who keep the Word of Wisdom?
4. Read the following teachings from President Dieter F. Uchtdorf.

Eventually I learned that God’s promises are not always fulfilled as quickly as or in the way we might hope; they come according to His timing and in His ways. Years later I could see clear evidence of the temporal blessings that come to those who obey the Word of Wisdom—in addition to the spiritual blessings that come immediately from obedience to any of God’s laws. Looking back, I know for sure that the promises of the Lord, if perhaps not always swift, are always certain. (Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Continue in Patience,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2010, 58)

5. How can keeping the Word of Wisdom lead to increased knowledge and wisdom? President Boyd K. Packer (1924–2015) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said:

I have come to know also that a fundamental purpose of the Word of Wisdom has to do with revelation. …
If someone “under the influence” can hardly listen to plain talk, how can they respond to spiritual promptings that touch their most delicate feelings?
As valuable as the Word of Wisdom is as a law of health, it may be much more valuable to you spiritually than it is physically. (Boyd K. Packer, “Prayers and Answers,” Ensign, Nov. 1979, 20)
