Family Home Evening: Scripture Power

I hope you enjoyed General Conference as much as we did! Was it just me, or did multiple speakers each day stress how crucial it is to read the Book of Mormon every day? With that reprimand ringing in our ears (we’ve been a bit lax with scripture study lately) my husband and I conducted the following Family Home Evening lesson.

Captain Moroni and the Title of Liberty

Age Range: Star, CTR

Song: Scripture Power (This Youtube link has the lyrics and music, since we couldn’t find it ANYWHERE on LDS.org)

Scripture: 2 Nephi 4: 15

And upon these I write the things of my soul, and many of the scriptures which are engraven upon the plates of brass. For my soul delighteth in the scriptures, and my heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my children.

Lesson: First we talked about the scripture; the boys have a huge respect for Nephi. We asked them what we should do if Nephi thought that it was important for his children to read the scriptures so they could learn and prosper. (Their answer, of course, was read the scriptures.)

Then we talked about General Conference again, and told them that what the prophet and apostles had told us to do was to read the Book of Mormon every day. We all agreed that if they told us to do it then it was important to be obedient. Max said that reading the scriptures will give us scripture power. We said that we needed scripture power in our home every day.

Next, Greg read the first chapter in the the Book of Mormon Stories, which was ‘How We Got the Book of Mormon.’ (The scripture stories are available to watch or read for free on LDS.org.)

Activity: Each of us in turn got to retell our favorite scripture story and talk about our favorite part. The kids were more excited about doing this than I had thought they would be, but they seemed most excited to hear what our favorite stories were.

Treat: Root Beer Floats!
