Singing with Little Ones

Singing a song is fun to do!

Of all the things I teach, the thing that my little two-year-olds love the most is singing. It’s right up there with listening to stories snug on mama’s lap and running around the backyard with their brothers. Their absolute favorites are the action songs, where they can wave their arms and move their fingers as we sing the words.

The problem is that once we got past The Itsy Bitsy Spider and Once there Was a Snowman, I had a hard time of thinking of different songs to keep them interested (and me sane). I’ve compiled here a list of songs to sing and play with little children…and bigger children, too.

Action Songs from the Children’s Songbook
Popcorn Popping
Rain is Falling All Around
Do As I’m Doing
Hinges
Once There Was a Snowman
Book of Mormon Stories
Birds in the Tree
Fun to Do
The Wise Man and the Foolish Man
Daddy’s Homecoming
Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
If You’re Happy and You Know It

Other Action Songs
The Itsy Bitsy Spider
No More Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
The Wheels on the Bus
I’m Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee
5 Little Monkeys (in a Tree)
I Had a Little Turtle (Tiny Tim)

Singing Games
London Bridge is Falling Down (and how to play)
Ring Around the Rosie (and how to play)

Now, this list is definitely not comprehensive, but it should help to keep the monotony of singing Tiny Tim over and over and OVER again at bay!

Family Home Evening: Scripture Power

I hope you enjoyed General Conference as much as we did! Was it just me, or did multiple speakers each day stress how crucial it is to read the Book of Mormon every day? With that reprimand ringing in our ears (we’ve been a bit lax with scripture study lately) my husband and I conducted the following Family Home Evening lesson.

Captain Moroni and the Title of Liberty

Age Range: Star, CTR

Song: Scripture Power (This Youtube link has the lyrics and music, since we couldn’t find it ANYWHERE on LDS.org)

Scripture: 2 Nephi 4: 15

And upon these I write the things of my soul, and many of the scriptures which are engraven upon the plates of brass. For my soul delighteth in the scriptures, and my heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my children.

Lesson: First we talked about the scripture; the boys have a huge respect for Nephi. We asked them what we should do if Nephi thought that it was important for his children to read the scriptures so they could learn and prosper. (Their answer, of course, was read the scriptures.)

Then we talked about General Conference again, and told them that what the prophet and apostles had told us to do was to read the Book of Mormon every day. We all agreed that if they told us to do it then it was important to be obedient. Max said that reading the scriptures will give us scripture power. We said that we needed scripture power in our home every day.

Next, Greg read the first chapter in the the Book of Mormon Stories, which was ‘How We Got the Book of Mormon.’ (The scripture stories are available to watch or read for free on LDS.org.)

Activity: Each of us in turn got to retell our favorite scripture story and talk about our favorite part. The kids were more excited about doing this than I had thought they would be, but they seemed most excited to hear what our favorite stories were.

Treat: Root Beer Floats!

Family Home Evening: General Conference

General Conference

Age Range: Star, CTR

Song: Follow the Prophet

Scripture: Mosiah 2:5-6

And it came to pass that when they came up to the temple, they pitched their tents round about, every man according to his family, consisting of his wife, and his sons, and his daughters, and their sons, and their daughters, from the eldest down to the youngest, every family being separate one from another.

And they pitched their tents round about the temple, every man having his tent with the door thereof towards the temple, that thereby they might remain in their tents and hear the words which king Benjamin should speak unto them;

Lesson: We discussed the ways that King Benjamin’s address from his tower was similar to General Conference. We also discussed why it’s important to listen when a prophet speaks to us and thought of ways that we could prepare for General Conference.

Activity: We downloaded the Junior Primary Conference Packet from Scriptures for Kids, printed off two copies, and stapled them together for Conference this weekend. (They also have packets for Nursery, Senior Primary, and Youth.)

Since I knew the boys would want something to color right away, we also printed the First Presidency Paper Dolls and a ‘Time for Conference’ watch. They loved both of these and can’t wait to color in their packets during Conference.

Treat: Ice Cream with Sprinkles. I guess they liked it last week!
