Lehi’s Vision of the Tree of Life

(Back to BoM Junior Seminary Overview)

Book of Mormon Lesson 12: 1 Nephi Chapter 8

To Prepare: Read through the linked lesson above (be sure to read 1 Nephi Chapter 8 and print a copy of the activity below for each child participating. You’ll also need scissors and glue!

To Teach: Begin with a prayer. Children may already be familiar with the vision of the Tree of Life, adjust the level of detail accordingly.

We read verse 2 to introduce the chapter, then skipped to verses 5-7. (A ‘waste’ is a barren wilderness or desert.)
Then we read verse 8-18 slowly, explaining what Lehi did, then what Sariah, Nephi, and Sam did, and finally what Laman and Lemuel did.

Next, read verses 19-34 to see what Lehi saw all the other people doing in his vision. At the end of the chapter, Lehi begged Laman and Lemuel to repent and listen, so that they could be happy.

We then talked about the symbols in Lehi’s vision.

  • Tree of Life and its fruit = the Love of God
  • The river of filthy water = filthiness and the depths of Hell
  • The rod of iron = the word of God (scriptures, revelation, word of the prophets)
  • The mists of darkness = temptations
  • The great and spacious building = the pride of the world

Finish by cutting out the symbols from Lehi’s vision and pasting them into place. Well done!

Bringing the Family of Ishmael

(Back to BoM Junior Seminary Overview)

Book of Mormon Lesson 11: 1 Nephi Chapter 7

To Prepare: Read through the linked lesson above (be sure to read 1 Nephi Chapter 7 and print a copy of the activity below for each child participating.

To Teach: Begin with a prayer. We read 1 Nephi 7:1-3 aloud. Laman and Lemuel had a different reaction this time, didn’t they? Not a single verse about how they murmured to be sent back for wives. (I guess they agreed that was important!)

As we continued reading verse 4-7, we saw that the Lord softened Ishmael (and his family’s) hearts, and they agreed to go with Nephi and his brothers. Unfortunately, that didn’t last long, and soon Laman, Lemuel, and half of Ishmael’s family were in rebellion, wanting to go back to Jerusalem.

Nephi attempted to rebuke and correct his brothers (verses 8-15). Read verse 16 to see how that went over.

Read verse 17 to see how Nephi reacted.

Read verse 18 and 19 to see what happened then.

Finally in verse 20 Laman and Lemuel repented of what they had done and asked for forgiveness – and Nephi forgave them! (Verse 21) They made it back to Lehi’s tents and once again gave thanks with offerings.

To end, find out what Nephi did when faced with his trial. You did it!

Nephi Returns with the Plates

(Back to BoM Junior Seminary Overview)

Book of Mormon Lesson 9: 1 Nephi Chapter 5

To Prepare: Read through the linked lesson above (be sure to read 1 Nephi Chapter 5 and print a copy of the activity below for each child participating. (There are two difficulty levels to choose from.)

To Teach: Begin with a prayer. We read 1 Nephi 5:1-3 aloud and talked about how even Sariah was complaining. Continue reading to see how Lehi comforted Sariah and how they reacted when Nephi and his brothers returned.

When Lehi received the plates of brass from Nephi, he immediately searched them from the beginning. I pointed out that they didn’t just toss them in their luggage and say, “Ok cool! We’ve got them now!” Lehi studied them. Read verses 17-22 to see what he said once he had read them.

Finish by helping Nephi get back to his father’s camp. Great job!
