1 Nephi Chapter 1

(Back to BoM Junior Seminary Overview)

Book of Mormon Lesson 6: 1 Nephi Chapter 1

To Prepare: Read through the linked lesson above (be sure to read 1 Nephi Chapter 1) and print a copy of the activity below for each child participating. There is a choice today between a coloring/drawing page and a crossword.

To Teach: Begin with a prayer. This lesson is pretty easy: we read 1 Nephi Chapter 1 slowly and talked about each part of the story as we came to it. Key points we highlighted:

  • Nephi made the metal plates of the record himself. Imagine if you had to do that each time you wanted to write something!
  • Who were the people Lehi saw in his vision? (God, Jesus, the 12 Apostles)
  • What was the book? (scriptures!)
  • Why did Lehi rejoice when he found out Jerusalem would be destroyed? (Because those who listened would have a chance to be saved)

End by emphasizing that the Lord’s tender mercies are extended to those who exercise faith in Him. Finish by doing the activity sheets. Good job!

The Keystone of our Religion

(Back to BoM Junior Seminary Overview)

Book of Mormon Lesson 4: Title Page, Introduction, and Testimony of Witnesses

To Prepare: Read through the linked lesson above and print a copy of the activity below for each child participating. You will also need scissors, glue, and another piece of paper or a scripture journal for gluing the pieces to.

To Teach: Begin with a prayer. Then we read the title page of the Book of Mormon. We talked about what it is and where it came from. Then, we read this quote from Ezra Taft Benson.

“The major mission of the Book of Mormon, as recorded on its title page, is ‘to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations.’

“The honest seeker after truth can gain the testimony that Jesus is the Christ as he prayerfully ponders the inspired words of the Book of Mormon.

“Over one-half of all the verses in the Book of Mormon refer to our Lord. Some form of Christ’s name is mentioned more frequently per verse in the Book of Mormon than even in the New Testament.

“He is given over one hundred different names in the Book of Mormon. Those names have a particular significance in describing His divine nature.”

The kids thought it was cool that half of the verses in the Book of Mormon mentioned or referred to Christ, and also that a hundred names were used to do it. I asked them to each try to come up with a name for Jesus Christ. Then I had them flip to a random page in the Book of Mormon and see if they could find a reference to Jesus. Only one child couldn’t find a reference on their page (it was one of the battle chapters in Alma!) and they found at least one name they hadn’t thought of.

Then we talked about how the Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion. Use the worksheet to talk about how our church is built on the twin principles of Jesus Christ and his atonement, and Latter-day prophets/revelation. The Book of Mormon testifies of Christ, and is evidence that Joseph Smith was a prophet.

We also read Moroni’s promise and talked about how to get a testimony of the Book of Mormon.

Finish by cutting and building your arch. You did it!

The Plan of Salvation

(Back to BoM Junior Seminary Overview)

Book of Mormon Lesson 3: The Plan of Salvation

To Prepare: Read through the linked lesson above and print a copy of the activity below for each child participating. You will also need scissors and glue. (Yes. This is the same activity as the first lesson of Old Testament!)

Plan of Happiness Cut and Glue

To Teach: Begin with a prayer. My kids are already familiar with the Plan of Salvation. Whether your kids are or aren’t, this quote is a good intro.

The plan of salvation is “the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ, designed to bring about man’s immortality and eternal life. It includes the Creation, Fall, and Atonement, along with all God-given laws, ordinances, and doctrines. This plan makes it possible for all people to be exalted and live forever with God”

We talked a little bit about what it means to be exalted. Read 2 Nephi 2:25-28 and discuss. We then read the list of names for the Plan in the Book of Mormon.

  • The great and eternal plan of deliverance from death
  • The merciful plan of the great Creator
  • The plan of redemption
  • The plan of salvation
  • The great plan of happiness
  • The plan of mercy

The kids all agreed that these sounded like good things. Emphasize that Heavenly Father’s plan is designed to bring His children eternal salvation and happiness. Remind children that we need Jesus Christ’s help to make it through the plan and get back to Heavenly Father. As we choose to live the gospel of Jesus Christ and follow God’s plan, we prepare to receive eternal life through the Savior’s Atonement.

Finish with the cut and glue, being sure to explain each step as they complete it. You did it!
