Book of Mormon Lesson 8: 1 Nephi Chapters 3-4
To Prepare: Read through the linked lesson above (be sure to read 1 Nephi Chapter 3 and chapter 4) and print a copy of the activity below for each child participating.
To Teach: Begin with a prayer. We read 1 Nephi 3:1-4 aloud and talked about why it was so important for Nephi and his family to have the brass plates (scriptures). Then we read verses 5-6 and talked about the different responses between Laman and Lemuel (murmuring) and Nephi (not murmuring). At this point, Laman and Lemuel are very relatable. We all agreed that we could imagine complaining at being asked to do what they were asked to do.
Next read 1 Nephi 3:7 aloud and discuss it. Encourage children to mark this verse in their scriptures if desired – it’s the first Scripture Mastery verse in the Book of Mormon!
We read through the rest of chapter 3 and chapter 4, going over the story as we went. We spent extra time discussing why Nephi was supposed to kill Laban.
Finish by helping Nephi disguise himself as Laban. You did it!
