Nephi Gets the Brass Plates

(Back to BoM Junior Seminary Overview)

Book of Mormon Lesson 8: 1 Nephi Chapters 3-4

To Prepare: Read through the linked lesson above (be sure to read 1 Nephi Chapter 3 and chapter 4) and print a copy of the activity below for each child participating.

To Teach: Begin with a prayer. We read 1 Nephi 3:1-4 aloud and talked about why it was so important for Nephi and his family to have the brass plates (scriptures). Then we read verses 5-6 and talked about the different responses between Laman and Lemuel (murmuring) and Nephi (not murmuring). At this point, Laman and Lemuel are very relatable. We all agreed that we could imagine complaining at being asked to do what they were asked to do.

Next read 1 Nephi 3:7 aloud and discuss it. Encourage children to mark this verse in their scriptures if desired – it’s the first Scripture Mastery verse in the Book of Mormon!

We read through the rest of chapter 3 and chapter 4, going over the story as we went. We spent extra time discussing why Nephi was supposed to kill Laban.

Finish by helping Nephi disguise himself as Laban. You did it!

Fly for Flags

My oldest son had to design a board game to review his history lessons. It turned out pretty well:

Fly for Flags, Printable Geography Board Game

…although it took me a while to trace a map onto a piece of cardboard and even longer for him to color it in!

If you or your kids would like to play a game that helps review the countries and flags of North, Central, and South America, I’ve made a printable version for you!

To make:

  1. Print out the board, rules, and reference map. You can print the board on cardstock or on regular paper if you plan to glue it to something sturdier like cardboard or posterboard.
  2. Cut out and assemble the board.
  3. Print out the flag cards on white cardstock and cut them apart.
  4. Print and cut out the airport cards (I printed 2 copies of this so we would have a bigger deck) and action cards. I strongly recommend either printing them on separate colors of cardstock or marking the backs (that’s what we did) since the stacks of cards have to remain separate.

Then all you need to play is something to serve as player tokens and a die to roll. I hope you enjoy it and it helps with your geography lessons!

Lehi and His Family Flee

(Back to BoM Junior Seminary Overview)

Book of Mormon Lesson 7: 1 Nephi Chapter 2

To Prepare: Read through the linked lesson above (be sure to read 1 Nephi Chapter 2) and print a copy of the activity below for each child participating. There is a choice today between a coloring/drawing page and a secret message.

To Teach: Begin with a prayer. We read 1 Nephi 2:1-2 aloud and asked the children what they would do if they had a dream they should pack up and leave their home. Most of them responded that they would react differently if they had a dream than if they knew the dream was from Heavenly Father. Then we read verses 3-4 to see what Lehi did. We talked about what he took vs what he left behind. They were very familiar with what Lehi left/took, but were a little surprised when we translated it into modern terms. (We’d leave the tv, computers, video games, toys, etc.)

We also talked about the three different ways Lehi’s sons reacted to their situation. Read verses 12-13 for Laman and Lemuel, verse 16 for Nephi, and verse 17 for Sam. We talked a lot about murmuring, and how – so far – what Laman and Lemuel were doing wrong was the same thing we ALL might be doing in their situation…complaining.

Then we read verses 19-24 to see what blessings Nephi was promised, and the conditions placed on those promises. God blesses those who are obedient and faithful!

Finish by doing the activity sheets. You did it!
